Chip-locked printers: Dymo 550 and Niimbot
Some printers only print on labels of their own brand. A chip (RFID or NFC) in the genuine roll tells the printer the label size; without it, printing is blocked or degraded.
- Dymo LabelWriter 550, 550 Turbo and 5XL: accept only genuine Dymo labels recognised by the chip. The older LabelWriter 450 and 4XL have no such lock.
- Niimbot (B1, B21, D11, D110…): the maker states its printers only recognise genuine Niimbot labels with their RFID chip.
Before buying generic labels, check the exact printer model. Zebra, Honeywell, TSC, Brother TD, iDPRT, Phomemo PM-241, Xprinter and MUNBYN printers accept labels of any brand, as long as the dimensions fit.
Brother QL printers
Brother QL printers use DK rolls: the labels sit on a dedicated plastic holder that guides the roll and tells the printer the size. There is no chip, but an ordinary roll without the holder won’t fit. “DK-compatible” rolls from other brands come with the holder.
Reading the result
- Compatible: every known value fits.
- With caveats: usable, with a limit (blank edges, core adapter, special roll).
- Check: the maker doesn’t publish a value that matters, such as the maximum roll diameter.
- Not compatible: at least one value exceeds the printer’s limits.
To size a roll, use the label roll calculator.
